About the Department

The Department of Sanskrit Language and Literature under the School of Language, Literature and Arts is established in 2015. The Department is engaged in teaching and research pertaining to Sanskrit Language and Vedic Literature. Department intended to focus on the views preserved in the Sanskrit text regarding Socio-Religious life, Philosophical exposition, Ecological Balance etc. for the enrichment of the social values.

Sanskrit Literature encompasses within it a number of disciplines such as, Grammar, Linguistics, Philosophy, Logic, Aesthetics, Arts, Discourse Analysis and so on, related to various aspects of human life and accumulated through a long span of time.  It is necessary that our students come to be acquainted with the contributions of our heritage in various domains of knowledge so that they get further opportunity to derive insights into respective disciplines.

To achieve this goal, all the courses for M.A. and Ph.D have been prepared with inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches.

Each course is designed in such a way that the students get acquainted with the span of Sanskrit language and Vedic literature on a particular domain of knowledge, the content of it, the researches done on it so far, and the relevance of such knowledge within the ambit of current modern domains of knowledge and scholarship.  This will generate confidence in the students so that they can take part in contemporary discourses. These courses cover major knowledge domains of Indian Intellectual traditions.

Mission

  • Encourage the usage of Sanskrit language and researches on the various fields of its literature.
  • Comparative studies on the scientific thoughts prevailing different Sanskrit texts.
  • Providing proper guidance to students in areas like literature, linguistics, Philosophy, Computational Sanskrit, Vedic Studies, Poetics, Sanskrit Shastras etc.

Objectives of the Department

  • Sanskrit is an ancient yet modern discipline. The scope of Sanskrit is getting ever wider day by day. Keeping this view, the Department of Sanskrit has recently framed syllabus for Online Certificate Course in Sanskrit and Vedic Studies.
  • To frame a curriculum that is in conformity with other Universities in India & abroad.
  • To introduce diploma & certificate courses.
  • The department intends to impart teaching in Sanskrit medium to facilitate easy understanding among students from other states and abroad.
  • The Department will make an effort to revise and update its syllabus from time to time.
  • The Department intends to organize one National/International level workshop/Conference every year, themes for these events would be based on topics of current relevance.
  • The Sanskrit Literary Association may be formed to organize literary events for students. Various Eminent scholars from other universities interact with students on various areas of knowledge in Sanskrit. Every year the Sanskrit Day/Sanskrit week is celebrated in the department by undertaking various activities. The department will also arrange a counseling session for students and inform them about job opportunities in Sanskrit.

  • To develop stronger alumni association to cultivate the source of funding to the department.
  • Increasing exposure to students through student exchange programme with other universities.

  • To focus on regional contribution of Sanskrit in research projects.
  • To provide language related software related to students.
  • The department intends to set up a departmental library and well-equipped language lab (with audio visual aids, computer, DVD’S, CD’S).
  • To make optimum use of computers in Teaching & Research process.
